Water is a very essential tool

Why you should drink more water

With the high water component that our body is naturally made up of, drinking water becomes a routine that comes with a number of benefits. Generally, water is used for virtually all processes of the body; it helps to cushion and protect delicate body organs, it helps in regulating the body temperature, it increases general body performance, it is a very essential tool in weight loss and it beautifies the skin. Other benefits include;

  • There is a standard essential minerals list which the body must be provided with as it helps with certain functions in the body. Minerals are known to be water soluble, and as such, adequate amount of water in the body ensures full supply of these minerals to all parts of the body.

  • The body produces a lot of toxins that are released from the body as wastes. These wastes are in several forms, which includes urine, sweat and feces. All these forms use water as a medium to ensure smooth excretion.

How do I know my water intake is insufficient?

The fastest way to know how sufficient your water intake is,  can be through your urine color. The darker the colour of your urine, the more water you need to take into your system. The normal colour of your urine should be clear to light yellow, anything darker than that can be an indicator for insufficient water.

Dehydration is another indicator of insufficient water intake. Clear symptoms of dehydration include dry mouth, excessive fatigue and dizziness. Having a dry and pale skin colour is also indicative of low water intake as water gives the skin a more luminous and clear glow.

Practical Steps to Take If You Want to Drink More Water Every Day

1. Include more water based foods in your diet

If drinking water seems like a boring task to you, you can decide to spice it up by ‘eating your water’. There are many food sources that contains more water content than others. Foods such as fruits and vegetables fall into this category. They include watermelons, spinach, cucumbers and some others. Although these sources cannot level up to the same amount as if you actually drink your water, it is still a way to increase the water content in your body. These food sources therefore make a great beneficial snack option to consider.

2. Set drinking goals and rewards

A great way to ensure you actually take in more water is to set goals for your water intake per day. There are newly produced water bottles which can even help with that; they have measurements imprinted on them that helps you to keep track of how far along your goal you are per hour.

A great incentive to make this work is by setting a reward for yourself each time to attain each set goal. The more enticing the reward is, the more eager you are to achieve or even supersede these set goals.

3. Be deliberate about it; set reminders

You could choose to be more intentional in your desire by deliberately setting alarms to remind you to drink your water intermittently all through the day. This helps you in cases whereby you ‘forget’ your water intake quest.

4. Mix Your Water with Flavours; Only Natural

If you are the type that gets bored easily with just one type of flavour, or your taste buds keep shouting for more creativity on your part.  You can choose to be more creative in your water intake style. Adding slices of fruits into your water helps to create an entirely new flavour of water, aside from the bland taste.

Fruit infused water helps to stir up a level of excitement in you that encourages you to take in more water. You can choose to be more adventurous by adding different types of fruit in your water. Enjoy.

5. Always keep a source of water around you

How do you get to drink water if you do not have water, that’s ironic right? A major secret to drinking more water is by ensuring that you are always surrounded by water. Do not let water become scarce to you, wherever you might be.  Strategically place bottles of water in obvious places all around your room, and office. Ensuring that a bottle of water is always in your sight,  this keeps you constantly reminded that you should drink water.

6. Drink a glass of water every time you go to the washroom

One very constant activity that you will embark on is using the bathroom or washroom regularly. You can then choose to make a good water habit out of it by ensuring to drink water before or after each visit.  Following this pattern ensures you take in more water than you normally will.
